Suspected kidnapper demands N5m ransom, then kills seven-year-old victim
THE Lagos State Police Command has arrested 25-year-old Onyeka Patrick who allegedly kidnapped a seven-year-old boy for N5 million ransom and later killed his victim.
Lagos State police boss, Alhaji Umar Manko, yesterday paraded the suspect and three others at the State command Headquarters, GRA, Ikeja.
According to Manko, who was represented by the command’s spokesman, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Onyeka Patrick allegedly kidnapped the seven-year-old-boy simply identified as Ayuba, who was said to have been playing in the suspect’s compound.
He had allegedly demanded a ransom of N5 million but when the money was not forthcoming, killed the boy and dumped the body in a pit.
``The suspect, through his confessional statement , claimed the boy played into their compound as they were neighbours. He kidnapped the boy and took him to the back of the compound, strangled him to death and concealed his body in a sack at his residence No. 16, Third Avenue, a building next to the victim’s residence, Mumako Estate, Oke Rube, Ikotun on the outskirts of Lagos.
``Onyeka claimed he later took the body and hid it inside the sewage pit of an uncompleted building in the same neighbourhood and wrote a letter with his mobile phone number and sent it to the deceased father, demanding N5 million ransom before the boy would be released.
``While people who were around were reading the letter, a brother to the deceased, who recognized the suspect’s language, reported the case to the police which led to his arrest.
“ Onyeka, led the police to recover the decomposed body of the victim which has been deposited at the Isolo General Hospital for autopsy.’’ Manko said.
In another development, a 25-year-old house help was also arrested for allegedly stealing her employer’s jewelries valued at about N20million less than 48 hours after her employment.
Manko said the suspect sold the gold to a buyer at N1.3 million and the buyer then re-sold the said jewelries at N1.4 million.
The suspect, the man that introduced her to the victim and the buyers were paraded before newsmen.
``This group and others now at large specialize in gaining employment as house-helps or drivers with fake names, addresses, fake guarantors, phone numbers and then escape with the employer’s property,’’ she said, adding that efforts were on to recover the jewelries.

Gunmen kill five in Nigeria drive-by shooting
KANO, Nigeria — Motorcycle-riding gunmen on Tuesday sprayed bullets on a group of men playing draughts in the northern Nigerian hub of Kano, killing at least five and wounding two, police and residents said.
"We have just evacuated five dead bodies and two seriously injured people from the scene of the attack," a police rescuer told AFP, adding that witnesses had counted nine attackers on three motorcycles.
Residents in the densely populated Dakata district of Kano confirmed the attack but could not provide details on the identity of the gunmen or their motives.
Kano police spokesman Magaji Majia confirmed the incident but did not give a casualty figure.
"There was a shooting incident in Dakata area where some gunmen on motorcycles fired into a crowd of people playing draughts. We are still gathering details. We are yet to ascertain the number of casualties," he said.
Draughts is a popular game in Nigeria and small crowds often form around two players who set up a board on a shady street-side or under a tree.
Earlier Tuesday, the authorities in Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, banned moto-taxis in a bid to stem the tide of violent crime perpetrated by attackers riding mopeds.
The suspension followed a weekend gun attack on the convoy of the emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, an influential Nigerian Muslim figure, by men riding on mopeds in which five people were killed.
Kano Deputy Governor Abdulahhi Umar Ganduje said in a statement that following a security report after the attack, the government resolved "to suspend the carrying of people on motorcycles as from Thursday (January 24)."
"This is to ensure that every motorcyclist is registered with the relevant authorities for the security and safety of all," he said in the statement.
The operation of moto-taxis has been banned in several areas in Nigeria, notably in the cities of Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Warri.
The use of mopeds to commit violent crimes is often cited by officials as the key reason for the ban.

LAUGH AWAY THE STRESS

A lady prayed: Oh Lord,I don’t want to marry a short man.Any short man that is coming my way,I bound him by Holy Ghost Fire!

Immediately she heard the word billionaire, her prayer changed.
She said: Oh Lord,is that your voice?who am I to say no? I will marry the content and ignore the container.

LAUGH AWAY THE STRESS
Letter to news time of warri column editor
Hi uncle akpors,I am a lady aged 26,name is Elizabeth.
I left my husband with the maid and my baby at home,I drove for just about 2km from home and my car engine started to overheat,so I had to turn back to get another car.
When I got home,I found my husband in bed with our maid,I don’t know what to do now, please help me.
Uncle Akpors: over heating of the engine after such short distance can be caused by problems associated with the radiator, you need to check the oil and water level in your engine before you start your journey.
You must also make sure your car is serviced regularly to avoid problems in future.
Hope this helps……
